In the novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," the Tin Woodsman started off as human. An enchanted axe chopped his body off...piece by piece. Each piece was replaced by a tin prosthetic. EVERYTHING gets chopped off and replaced. Can't imagine why this never made it to the Judy Garland movie.
This image shows a man in a forest with tin prosthetic arms and legs. He holds an axe in one hand, rendered in a fairy tale style.
