Alexander Komnenos rode back into the Byzantine base camp under the early afternoon sun, his armor dulled by dust and the blood of battle but shining with the aura of victory. His men followed close behind, some cheering, others worn with the weight of their triumph. The camp stirred at their return, and soldiers came forth to greet their brothers, slapping their shoulders in camaraderie, exchanging grins and laughter.
But Alexander’s focus was fixed beyond the momentary celebration. God had granted them victory, and he would see that this blessing was acknowledged before he could rest. He dropped to one knee, bowing his head as he offered a silent prayer.
