Despite the fact that Michelangelo was about forty years older than Tommaso, and that the great artist had love affairs with several other young men in the meantime, and Tommaso, in later years, was married with two children, they loved, respected, and admired each other so much that they practically lived together for thirty years, until Michelangelo's death, in a harmonious and almost cloudless relationship, as their letters, Michelangelo's poems, and contemporary accounts attest. It was a "marriage of true minds", as Shakespeare might have said about them if he had not been born two months after Michelangelo's death.
