'Auroras' are a great prompt word which I used a lot. And I like your 'flexibly swirling' prompt idea. Let's see, waving, bending, pendulating, tossing, turning, undulating ...

I noticed that "swirling" produces circles, especially if the aspect ratio of the image is 1:1 (square).  This gets a little un-maelstromy.  I think waving, undulating,. flaring, ... are definitely worth a try.
