Pandora was the first woman created by Zeus, the king of the gods, from earth. Zeus gave Pandora to Epimetheus, Prometheus' brother, as his wife, but warned Epimetheus not to marry her. Zeus also gave Pandora a beautiful Pithos (think ancient jar/vase) and told her not to open it, but her curiosity got the best of her and she opened it anyway. Modern interpretation from translation: The box contained many evils, including disease, sorrow, violence, greed, madness, old age, and death. However, Zeus also secretly added hope to the box to help people survive. Pandora was able to close the lid in time to contain hope, but the evils had already flown out over the earth.
