Hong Kong’s cession after the Opium War created a colonial entrepôt governed by racialised law and land seizure; urban overcrowding, poor sanitation and exploitative labour left the working Chinese population exposed to epidemics and hardship, causing concentrated mortality in the thousands across the 19th century.
