I feel Tywin's loss of Joanna in the pit of my heart. Imagine seeing your wife killed by a knife, and having to keep that knife in your house for the rest of your life. Of course, a knife not the same as a person, especially not a marvellous person like Tyrion Lannister, but the feeling must be the same. So, as much as I think it is fair and just that Tywin was shot to death while sitting on the privy, I also want to give him a hug. Sometimes.
"The king is tired. Send him to his chambers."
How can I so respect a man and yet so revile him? Perhaps the answer is that wisdom is not only for the good. Or perhaps the answer is sympathy—I never knew my mother, except in paintings and the four dreadful times I tried to resurrect her, yet sometimes I despise myself—and even my sister as well, although I came out first—for killing her. We were conscious in the womb. We fought over our shared umbilical cord. Was there nothing we could have done to slip out of her body without tearing her apart?
