Lammergeier Gypaetus barbatus, aka the Bearded-Vulture or Ossifrage is highly specialised for feeding on bones (70% to 90% of its diet) rather than flesh. It drops bones onto hard surfaces to shatter them before consuming them. Its oesophagus is flexible and elastic to accommodate even large bone fragments, and its digestive fluid is highly acidic to be able to digest them.
The name Lammergeier comes from the German LΓ€mmergeier (lamb vulture) under the (probably) mistaken belief that it predates on lambs.
This image shows a Bearded Vulture with a unique appearance, dropping a large bone onto a stone surface below. The scene is set against the backdrop of rocky mountain slopes, rendered in a wetbrush watercolor wildlife art style.
