The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB)
The CMB is the faint, nearly uniform glow of microwave radiation that fills all of space. It is relic light released when the Universe cooled enough—about 380 000 years after the Big Bang—for protons and electrons to combine into neutral hydrogen, letting photons travel freely. Because continued cosmic expansion has stretched those photons to millimetre wavelengths, the background now appears as a near-perfect black-body spectrum with a temperature of 2.725 K and roughly 400 CMB photons in every cubic centimetre of the cosmos.
