Either an Arawak or Taino indigenous woman of South America or the Caribbean, Tituba (b: circa 1662-1666) was a slave in Salem Village in the Province of Massachusetts Bay in 1692. Accused that year of witchcraft, she confessed to being a witch after being beaten by her master. Jailed for a year without trial, she disappeared from the historical record in 1693; she was the first accused in the hysteria of the Salem Witch mania that followed, leading to the executions of 19 people
This image depicts a young Taino woman in the attire of a colonial servant, set amidst the village of Salem in 1692 Massachusetts. Rich, fantastical details abound in this 8k digital artwork.
