In Brittany, the legend says that when you die comes the Ankoù. The Ankoù is not death but it is its servant. They are a creature from the other world. The legend says that the last person in the year that have died in Brittany, becomes the Ankoù for the next year. The Ankoù scours Brittany every night with thei meagre horses and his squeaking cart, Karriguel-an-Ankoù, in order to collect all the dead of the previous day. Ones says that if one hears the cart squeaking, or see the skeleton-face or the Ankoù, it is an ill omen and will most likely result to the person's imminent death or the death of one of their relatives or friends. No one can try to get pass the Ankoù's guard. They have an upside-down scythe to catch anyone trying to get away. The Ankoù also has a boat, Ar Vag Noz to collect all the sailors lost at sea and bring them to a safe haven.
The Ankoù is not necessarily an evil creature. It is merely Death's servant. It helps those who die to reach the Other World.
This image shows a skeletal figure cloaked in black, wielding an inverted scythe. He rides a cart pulled by a thin, dark horse, depicted with horror elements in a Gustave Doré style.
