Tribal and indigenous spiritual veneration of the wolf goes back a long way in Europe. The howl of the Wolf Fathers (like Dazhbog, Odin, Mars and others) and the Wolf Mothers (like Luperca, Angrboda, Siena and others) has always been loud in our blood. Physical artifacts of wolf statues and venus figures wearing wolf masks go back at least as far as the Vinča culture, 7,000 years ago, while cave art from around 30,000 years ago indicates that the veneration of the wolf goes even deeper into our shared ancestry. Reclaiming this spiritual kinship in our awakening age feels like coming back to some forgotten home. It feels like like embracing a piece of the self once thought lost.
The connection was never lost. The Wolf Mothers and the Wolf Fathers of our ancestral past have always been with us, waiting patiently in the deep places of our hearts and minds. Our howls echo alongside their howls. Even after all of this time, our kinship with the wolf has never been forgotten.
This image shows a shaman woman walking toward the viewer. She wears a wolf headdress and holds a drum with a blue wolf paw print, rendered in a dramatic Baroque style.
