“Oh, we know!” Mynerva spat. “You were his protege, the bright star in his night, his golden child!” 

“I was simply a talented thief who dared to steal from the Prime once.” Tyelion smirked briefly. Gasps and murmurs swept through the crowd. 

“I know,” Mynerva replied. “I remember. I saw.” Her gaze softened slightly. “You stole two things that day. One was given back. The other… had never been taken from you until now.”

Confusion flickered across Tyelion’s face. “What else did I steal?”

Mynerva chuckled bitterly under her breath. “Our hearts, Tyelion. Your courage, your spunk, your audacity – we’d never seen it before. Our spirits had all been dimmed. But there you were –  a stupid, saucy grin on your mud-smeared face, laughing in the face of Yanix’s anger.” She cocked her head at the Elf, emerging from her memories. “You’ve lost some of that.” She remarked. 

“I’ll be the first to admit that I have changed somewhat.” Tyelion replied. “But who I am inside has not and will never change. I never meant to leave you all to the mage. That he would take his sadistic, twisted anger out on you all – it never occurred to me that that would happen. I’m sorry.”

“Sorry doesn’t fix anything or bring back the dead!” A tall Drow snapped. 

“I know!” Tyelion shot back. “Yet how many of you would have jumped at a chance to get out of this Bresh-forsaken city? Hm?” He studied the faces of those around him. The rogues bowed their heads or looked away. “All of you would have!” Tyelion shouted. 

“So why did you come back?” Mynerva asked.

Tyelion turned to face her. “Because I heard what was happening, and I could not leave you all to suffer and die. I know you all hate me. But I’m still one of you. I’m asking you to give me another chance. I swear to you – I will not leave you again, and I will kill the mage or die trying.”

“You heard that Bresh-cursed mage; he said he’s a god!” Someone protested, their voice shrill with fear. 

“Do you think that matters to me?” Tyelion retorted. “I have just as much on the line as any of you! He’s no god, and he can die just like any other man!” 

“And if you’re wrong?” Embyrn asked softly, looking up at him. Her eyes were wide with worry. 

“If I’m wrong, then there was no point to any of this.” Tyelion whispered back, closing his eyes briefly. 

“Do you give us your word, Tyelion?” Mynerva asked, not having heard his words to Embyrn. 

“I give my word as Prime that I will free us all from the corrupt nobles and mage both.” Tyelion declared. 

Mynerva gave a scoffing laugh. “But you’re not Prime yet.” She lifted her chin. “If you want to be Prime, Tyelion Greyhand, you must prove yourself.” 

“I will.” He replied resolutely. “I claim Primeship.” 

Mynerva smiled wolfishly. “Then I challenge.” 

“What makes you think we’d accept traitors as Prime and Second?” A swarthy woman asked, sneering. She folded her arms across her chest, her stance cocky. 

Tyelion barked an incredulous laugh. “Traitors?” He turned in a circle, meeting the eyes of those around him. “Is that how you see us?” 

The few Daerfall soldiers present shifted their weight uneasily, hands clenched around the hilts of their weapons as they glanced at the rogues around them.

“You abandoned us.” The woman replied. “Left us all in this cold, dark city to suffer under the mercies of the mage while you and the Shadow Thief relaxed in freedom and warmth.”

Tyelion faced her, studying her. “I know your face,” he said. “You were part of Yanix’s old gang. Mynerva, was it?” 

She nodded warily. “Aye, that was me. I’m the only one left of that gang now. The lone survivor.” 

Tyelion bowed his head. “I’m sorry. Truly. I… looked up to Yanix.”
