Part 3/3: Her ideas later led to gender studies being able to establish itself as a science. In today's science, it has often been empirically confirmed that gender-specific behavior is rarely or never based biological, but rather is socially acquired. De Beauvoir's ideas had an immense influence on philosophy, science and also on the rights of women in society - even if not everyone is convinced of them to this day.
Part 2/3: With this background, it is understandable that an important theme of her philosophy was the critical reflection of the role of women in society. It ties in with an older but unknown idea from philosophy, namely that mind has no gender (François Poullain de La Barre, 1647-1723). However, the term “woman” is not only understood in society as a biological category, it is also an attribution of meaning to stereotypical role models. With this background it becomes clear what de Beauvoir means when she writes: "You are not born a woman, you become one."
Part 1/3: Next to Hannah Arendt, Simone de Beauvoir is probably the most influential female philosopher of the 20th century. In over 2,500 years of history of philosophy, among the really big names of philosophers, there are very few female ones. This is not because philosophy is men's work or that women are less intelligent. It simply has to do with social structures, how gender roles were usually thought of: For example, women were not allowed to study in most cultures until the 20th century. Simone de Beauvoir is one of the pioneering female philosophers.

A beautiful picture; the grayscale is well used here, giving emphasis to her figure in contrast to the more sketch-like background, with the city and the sea of people, and engendering a proper feel of importance. Amazingly written description of her; she is really important, isn't she?
