I agree with your observation. For Shaun Tan, and the 4 artists you have referenced here, I much prefer the SDXL models as it picks up the 'naive' aspect better. Though the rounded, shaded characters are cute too!

Recently I have a renewed interest in artist studies. They’re quite fun! 

Thank you @bronfoth and @Tina-auf-der-Blumenwiese for inspiration. Although Flux Schnell is able to produce a decent 2x2 spread, I have to give the prompt a little more to go on. Additionally, the images have a 3D claymation feeling rather than the illustrative quality that SDXL produces.
