The Forest’s Haven 

“Of course, We don't anything to do with that cursed thing,” said Merida. Fairbairn pulled a plastic bag from her tactical vest and placed the flower in the bag.

“Are you going to be alright?” Helena asked.

“I think so,” said Merida. “But would you come and check on us later?”

Helena smiled. “Of course. As long as it doesn't interfere with my duties to my team, But I will check with Colonel Larkin.”

“Thank you, Sister Helena,” said Nicholas.

“In the Meantime, rest and have something to eat.” The two women helped Merida and Nicholas to their bed and once they were settled John came into the room.

“Mama? Papa? Are you alright?” he asked.

Helena smiled. “They're alright, My child. They need a little rest, that's all. I will stay with them for a while,” Helena replied.


She reached into her bag for her radio. “Sierra-Hotel to Sierra Golf Two-Four Actual. First family has been healed. Requesting permission to stay with the family. They have a young child that needs watching.”

“Permission granted, Sister,” said Colonel Larkin.

“Thank you, Colonel,” said Helena.

“Fairbairn?”

“Aye, Sir.” said Fairbairn.

“Go ahead on to the next house, I'll have Pfluger join you.”

“Aye sir,” said the Scot.

“Helena, once you are able to rejoin Fairbairn, do so.”

“Yes, sir,” Helena replied.

“Good Luck you two. Larkin out.”


Fairbairn left for the monastery to collect Pfluger, Helena sat by the fire watching John play. He reminded the Carmelite of her nephew Fredrick. Helena smiled and let out a little chuckle remembering when his parents brought Fredrick to the monastery. While they tried to mitigate most of the distractions, he brought a coat full of blocks with him and played on the floor of the visiting room, often knocking them down. His parents apologized profusely but Helena waved it off. 

“It's alright,” Helena told Fredrick's parents. “He's a child. Children do that sort of thing.”

Helena stayed with John until his parents were awake and alert. After assurances that Nicholas and Merida would be alright, Helena left the house. She looked at her watch; just a little after 1300 hours. After checking in with Colonel Larkin and Fairbairn, Helena started back to the monastery.


Helena squeezed the handle of the Zat and energy emanated from its tip, enveloping Nicholas sending him to the floor unconscious and twitching.

Fairbairn sprang into action and knelt by Nicholas and administered the smelling salts.

The man awoke with a start.

“Merida!” He exclaimed, Helena joined Fairbairn and Merida was able to get up and join the two women at her husband side.

“Easy, my love, don't get up too quickly, you’ve been infected by an illness. These two ladies have cured you.

“What do you remember?” Helena asked. Nicholas related the same story as his wife had told.

“May we take the flower for observation?” Helena asked. “We have an alchemist that will want to study it.”
