... seriously? Well, it's a British term for a country where government policies are considered by some to be overprotective or interfering unduly with personal choice (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanny_state ↗️). Coined in the 1960s by a Conservative party MP, the term could be perceived to unfairly criticise the Labour party's pro-poor policies - whch were recently descibed by a Labour party MP as 'a force for good'. The image was created for @oistar, whose experience at the hands of certain other 'forces' could be perceived to fall into the category of 'nanny state tactics'. South Africa's ANC government (claiming to be pro poor) has introduced many policies similar to those of a nanny state. However, it is NOT a nanny state as such. As a developing country with sluggish economic growth, it cannot afford to become one. Which is a pity ... The povery is appalling.
This image shows a meerkat mother in gothic attire pushing a baby in a pushchair in front of a London tenement block with a Union Jack and a banner reading "NANNY STATE!". The image is a whimsical caricature in warm, golden light.

Very informative. Yes I’ve heard this phrase applied to Ireland too but rules and regulations here are usually ‘obeyed’ with a nudge and a wink.
