Beautiful railway bridge of the silv'ry Tay,
Alas! I am very sorry to say,
That ninety lives have been taken away,
On the last sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.
A selection from the poem The Tay Bridge Disaster written by William McGonagall, 1880.
McGonagall was considered the worst poet ever to abuse the English language, and his poems were read in taverns and music halls for their unintentional hilarity.°
Thanks Nelly @Bloemeke!
°This is true and not hyperbole. His poems were that bad.

I once did a research for the worst poem ever (got bored with the "10 best poems ever") and it's so interesting that this poem is preserved for ever...👹🚬
There once was a poet named Billy,¶ Who drank porter and thought it quite silly,¶ He scribbled away,¶ In a most tipsy way,¶ And his verses grew sloshed and quite frilly.
A remarkable sharp photo from the old days!
Och aye very proud o' the Scottish talent (for unintentional humour). His poems are still being printed today - just fer laffs.

They didn't remember knocking down the highway overpass either because they drunkenly drove their lorries throughout, high as kites and singing songs about Irish independence.
