Brown military uniform and cigar

If the junior officer was a nonsmoker, the smoke bothered him. If he smoked, not being able to smoke too bothered him. But that was the privilege of rank.

Occasionally, though, there would be the junior officer who hated the smell of cigar smoke at first but who grew to enjoy it. They were special. She had a few coupons for the commissary. Cheap ones, of course. They would sputter "T-t-thank you, Ma'am" and salute.

Outside her office, she would ask "are you hooked yet?" Some foolishly said no.

"You are. Even if you don't smoke much."

They dared not reply in kind. They knew those who pleased her most got coupons for the cheap cigars she would never need to stoop to smoking.
