Beautiful.  The first signs of spring are starting to appear in our garden.

Such a joy ... Especially in the highveld ... By the way, those spring flowers I found in The Company's Gardens are definitely Cape snowdrops ... Checked them out at close quarters yesterday ... The green stripey bits are there ... 

Common names can be hugely confusing.  If it is *Crassula capensis*, it is indigenous and one of the fynbos species.  It also has a very interesting photosynthetic chemical pathway to conserve water during periods of water stress.  Unlike most plants, it opens the stoma (breathing holes) in the leaves only during the coolth of night to absorb carbon dioxide which is then used for photosynthesis during the day when the stoma are closed to prevent water loss.  Spekboom *portulacaria afra* does the same thing,, which is why spekboom leaves picked early in the mornings are deliciously tangy when the plant is under water stress -- the CO2 is stored as malic (apple) acid.
