The compass gleamed in my hand, the intricate goldwork catching the afternoon light. It was perfect for Theon, a reminder of the world beyond our small corner of EuthΔnia. A world he longed to explore.
A warm smile spread across Alcander's face as I approached his stall.
"Just this one, today," I said, holding up the compass.
"Theon's birthday, isn't it?" the kindly merchant boomed.
"Sixteen years stuck with a crazy person," I replied with a playful sigh.
Alcander chuckled, the sound rumbling through his chest. "You two are lucky to have each other."
I couldn't help but grin. "We are... but don't you dare tell him I said that."
Alcander winked. "Twenty Grecines, then." I handed over the triangular coins.
As I turned to leave, Alcander's voice stopped me. "Watch out for the Aegis Seers today, Gracelynn. Heard they're searching for new recruits."
A shiver ran down my spine. "Call me Gray," I muttered under my breath.

Very cool pic to go with an equally excellent snippet of story! I like it very much, and I would love to see more!
Wow, this book is progressing really well! The presenting of it, with both words and images, makes it especially potent. Definitely, the components of the image (especially, in my opinion, the slight tilt of her eyes, gentle and slightly playful, and the way each of them smile) can definitely help enhance a reader's understanding of the text, enhancing, for example, a reader's visualization of Alcander's warm, fatherly, familiar treatment of Gracelynn - the way they look at each other, you can definitely see their closeness and trust, just as you can infer that by their conversation. In the picture, the lines and incredibly rendered, and the effect created by the more grayed-out background is exceptional. In the text, the usage of imagery and the way you mention names, without explicitly written context but effective implications, (and maybe some foreshadowing?) are very commendable. Great job; I can't wait to read what's next!! π

I like the way she holds the compass.
