Each evening, as the golden light of dusk painted the sky in lavender and flame, he came.
The dog—graying now, his once-bright coat dulled by time and rain—sat upright, ears twitching at distant echoes that never materialized. The last time he saw his master, the man had knelt beside him, pressed a trembling hand to his head, and whispered something soft and warm. Then came the hiss of steam, the clang of departure, and the train swallowed him whole.
Years had passed. The world moved on, the depot closed, the rails grew wild with weeds. But the dog returned—each day, same time—as if some tether of memory pulled him forward through the fog of waiting.
He did not know the words for war or death or goodbye. He knew only loyalty. Hope. And the scent of a hand he hadn’t smelled in seasons.
And so he waited, watching the horizon where the tracks vanished into mist, for a whistle that would never blow.
Still, he waited. Because love remembers what time forgets.
