In 2010 a petition for Betty White to host the Academy Awards failed, because the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences didn't want to be told by the public what to do. When in 2019 designated host Kevin Hart stepped down because of his long career in homophobia, this was gay icon Betty White's big Academy Awards moment.
However, in 2009, on the set of "The Proposal", she had treated back then fairly unknown Ryan Reynolds like a "seething demon" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiDsqYt8c5I ↗️). Ten years later, Reynolds had become a Hollywood big shot. He took revenge by pulling some strings to use the time-delayed transmission of the awards show to edit out Betty White "live". To the public on the TV-sets worldwide, it appeared as if there wouldn't have been a host at all. Betty White only found out the next day.
To make her realise, it was him, he dressed up as master villain Gru from "Despicable Me" and sat in the first row, grinning at her all evening.
