Well, the subroutines are bound by the system in which they are running. No program can encompass the system that contains it. I read... think it might have been in "Everything and More", by David Foster Wallace,  that there's an equation which totes up for you the sheer number of calculations that a computing device could handle, based solely upon its mass. Long way of saying: I can't fully imagine the universe, because I am *in* that universe. Our AI buddy is inside a cramped, dark room, hearing voices and taking requests.

I also think of like (ie, imagine though I know not true) those human/androidish/hybrid things from movies where ppl's brains are plugged into machines, like the "Sarcophagus Class" Necromongers from Chronicles of Riddick or the "PreCogs" from Minority Report. But if we're going to get metaphysical and such, this is what pisses me off about bible-thumpers who have the audacity to pretend they comprehend god and god's will based on a collection of ultra-edited books assembled (and repeatedly edited and renegotiated) over centuries. oh really? sorry, I digress. This comes out of my study of taxonomies as related to my dissertation. A famous dead guy said something along the lines of [badly paraphrased] 'we only matter and exist insofar as we matter and exist in relation to god on the taxonomic hierarchy' of all creation. That really annoyed me. The implication was we only have a "place" because there's a god to which our place is relative
