The prompt was the title of a mystery novel by John Dickson Carr. There was nothing supernatural happening in the book, but it occurred to me that the title might trigger a creation suitable for a Halloween theme. According to prompt magic's rewrite of my prompt, the main character here is a necromancer, which certainly fits with the title.
