She sat hunched on the cold stone steps, rain soaking through her dress, though she didn’t seem to notice. Her hands, trembling and empty, rested in her lap where a letter used to be — now gone, taken by the wind or left behind in pieces. Her hair clung to her face in heavy strands, and her eyes stared ahead, hollow, as if watching something that wasn’t there anymore. The world around her blurred in the downpour, colors washed pale and gray, like the memories she was trying so hard not to relive. Behind her, the door remained shut. In front of her, nothing waited. Only the rain stayed with her — falling steady, soft, and cruel — like a silence that would never end.
