We're spoiled.  One of the major routes into Pretoria actually runs through a beautiful nature reserve.  If you're not driving, there's a good chance of seeing giraffes.  And a little detour takes you through another reserve (completely free to the public) where you'll often get close to zebras and as close as you'd care to come to wildebeest (gnus).
