(cont.) Anyway, I had the misfortune of taking out some bad loans through him because the banks (rightfully) didn't think my grand business idea was going to be profitable. (A brick-and-mortar model train store in the age of Amazon? What was I thinking?) My debts skyrocketed, but I kept borrowing more money, trying to keep the dream alive. I was getting angry visits from my loan shark, but still, he had never specifically threatened violence, nor perpetrated any. Even his name wasn't particularly scary. I mean, who's afraid of a guy who goes by JJ?

But I was a bit worried when JJ said we needed to talk to Mr. Sousa. I figured this is it, this is the point where they beat me to a pulp or make threats against my family. But what choice did I have but to go? It could only be worse if I ran or tried to bury my head in the sand. I had already borrowed so much money from my mother. I would do anything to keep them from dragging her into it. So I reluctantly accepted the invitation to meet.

The first time I met Mr. Sousa face-to-face was in the windowless back office of one of his laundromats. His cover story, the thing that he put on his tax forms, was that he was a legitimate business owner with a small empire of no-frills coin-operated laundry joints. And that much was true, as far as it went. Of course, it went much further than that.

Still, that was what he was known for, being the face of Val-U-King Laundry. I mean that literally. After he muscled out the owner of his first laundromat some 20 years ago, he plastered a cartoon version of his disembodied head on the side of the building with the caption, "This Man Wants to Clean Your Clothes!" He had more hair back then, but his wide-eyed smile seemed a bit deranged. Sort of like Frankie Valli on crack. When he expanded operations, he put his mug on each new building, even though that style had seemed out of date from the start. I guess mobsters are always trying to recreate some imagined past out of the movies.
