When I was very young, probably between age 5 and 8, my cousin Kyle and I would spend hours upon hours building little towns in the dirt for our dozens of the little Matchbox and Hot Wheels die-cast cars (and a few other brands, those two were the most popular). We would make roads with a spoon in the dirt and line them with pebbles, and we used Lincoln Logs to build little houses for the citizens of our towns.
One summer we took almost all our cars, stored in plastic gallon milk jugs with the top cut off so they had a little handle. I think we had nearly 300 cars with us. We too them to a park in the big city, in Dallas. We were ignorant country kids. We left our cars under some trees to go eat, and when we came back, they were all gone except one that had been buried.
We learned a lesson that day about taking care of our things, but I still fondly remember the long summer days we spent playing cars.
