Karel Thole

Karel Thole (Carolus Adrianus Maria Thole; 1914 – 2000) was a Dutch illustrator and painter, who also worked in Italy. He was best known for his work in the science fiction and horror genres. His art style is characterised by surreal, often fantastical imagery, blending hyperrealism with elements of the grotesque and the uncanny. Thole primarily used traditional media such as oil paints and gouache, employing a technique that involved meticulous detail and a vivid colour palette, resulting in striking, otherworldly compositions. His work is closely associated with the European pulp magazine and book cover illustration scene, where he made a lasting impact with his imaginative and often eerie visual narratives.
