Today, Little Alex wandered—deliberately, of course—into the highland forest and returned with an invitation. A tribe, reclusive and thought to be myth, welcomed her like kin. The Orang Pendek.

Smaller than men, quicker than shadows, and somehow charmed by a child with sticky fingers and impeccable grammar.

I watched nearby as she shared dried fruit, sketched their tools, and asked questions in five languages. She left them laughing.

I’ve led armies, crossed deserts, and survived French rations. But watching her turn legend into conversation might be the most impressive thing I’ve seen yet.
