Mythical first king and founder of Athens, it is said he born from the earth itself (an autochthon), and described as having his top half body like a man and the bottom half in serpent or fish-tail form. It is considered a culture hero, theaching the Athenians marriage, reading and writing, and ceremonial burial.
It is part of the myth of the contest between Poseidon and Athena, the contest decided the patronage of the city, in wich Cecrops choised Athena, giving her name to the city and build statues to her.
