Maxfield Parrish (1870 – 1966) was a painter and illustrator from the USA. He is known for his distinctive saturated hues and idealised Neo-Classical imagery. He started as a student of Howard Pyle and was part of Pyle’s movement, the Brandywine School. Later he became wildly successful, and his works were associated with the Art Nouveau and Symbolism style. Marvelling at the richness derived from a small range of printer’s inks, Parrish invented a painting system that used only cyan, magenta, yellow and black.
