It flows over the escarpment at the Tugela Falls on the western edge of the basalt cliffs of the Amphitheatre rock formation (on the right from this perspective). At 983m, the tiered Tugela Falls are marginally higher than the Angel Falls in Venezuela, although the Angel Falls claim is based on an uninterrupted drop of 979m. The Thukela River then runs through the deep and narrow ravine depicted in this image

Today 53 years ago, I was part of a group of 50 who had to be airlifted from the top (just left of the right sentinal, close to the Tugela Falls) after a massive unexpected snowfall.
