When the blue smoke finally cleared her vision, Ashildr shuddered. It was cold. The air smelled... stale. Like a room that had been resting for a dozen years before someone tried to open a window but raising dust in the process.
Night had fallen over the stately home. The warm summer night had been lit with comforting neon signs running the latest corporate advertisements. The lush green garden that Caten set out to explore was dark, except for the glow of some drones rushing past.
All in all, it seemed like a perfectly normal midsummer's night in the countryside, a still life taken right out of an Agatha Christie novel.
And then it dawned upon her.
