The coat of arms is based on an Aztec legend about the foundation of Tenochtitlán. According to this, the then still nomadic people of the Aztecs were looking for a sign indicating the exact location of their capital to be founded. The god Huitzilopochtli had instructed them to find an eagle that devours a snake sitting on a cactus. This cactus should grow on a rock in the middle of a lake. After two hundred years of hiking, they found the promised sign on a small island, in the marshirty Texcoco. Here they founded their new capital Tenochtitlán, today's Mexico City.
This image shows an old Aztec map of Mexico. An eagle battles a snake atop a cactus, rendered as a glowing crystal figurine in a Nouveau art style with triadic colors.
