Clyfford Still

Clyfford Still (1904 – 1980) was an artist from the USA, known for his significant contributions to the Abstract Expressionism movement. Still’s style is characterised by its large-scale canvases, bold colours, and dynamic, jagged forms that convey a sense of raw emotion and intensity. He primarily used oil on canvas, creating works that emphasised the physicality of paint and the expressive potential of abstract forms. His art reflects a pioneering approach to Abstract Expressionism, focusing on the purity of colour and form to evoke deep emotional responses and redefine the boundaries of abstract art. He was part of a group of artists that came to be known as the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, alongside artists such as Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock.
