“Let's see who's gotten nerves and whose got tells,” said Colonel Larkin. 

“Or who has no idea of what they're doing,” said Bjornson dryly. 

Helena sensed the comment was directed at her, so she replied, “I might be a little rusty. It's been a while.”

“You’ve played before? Bjornson asked.
“It was a long time ago,” Sister Helena replied.

Larkin gave the Carmelite a side eye, suspicious already. “Define a long time,” he said. 

Sister Helena sipped her root beer. “Pre-convent,” she replied. Larkin, Fairbairn and Bjornson each blinked. Then they laughed.

“This I have to see,” said Bjornson. Larkin dealt the cards. Sister Helena watched quietly and deliberately studying each of her teammates moves. After a round of betting Helena folded, and Bjornson won the first game. Colonel Larkin passed the cards to Fairbairn. 

Five-card draw, threes and one eyed jacks are wild,” Scott said. The four placed their antes in the center of the table. Once again, Sister Helena studied each of her teammates moves. 

“Two cards,” she said. Once the bidding started, Helena once again folded. 

“Don't be afraid to put some skin in into the game,” said Bjornson. “Remember, it's just a friendly competition.”

“I'm aware of that, Bjornson,” replied Sister Helena. After bets were made Colonel Larkin won the game. He passed the cards to Bjornson. 

“Texas hold'em. In honor of our Carmelite from the Lone Star State,” he said with a grin. He dealt out each person two hole cards. All put their blinds out as each in succession look at their hole cards. 

“10,” announced Bjornson. 


“Call,” said Colonel Larkin. Fairbairn did the same. So did Helena. 
“So what do we call this look? Poker prayer face,” asked Fairbairn.

“You could,” replied Sister Helena. “I call it studying patterns and tactical deception.”

“You’ve done this before?” Bjornson replied.

“Part of my tactical training, Sergeant,” Helena replied. “First in the Air Force, then in the NID. You pick things up.” Colonel Larkin cringed in his seat when Sister Helena mentioned the NID. Sister Helena sensed the tension and added. “What can I say? Old habits die hard!” There was a bit of a pause with all the tables stunned.

“Oh no! I'm playing cards with a Black Ops nun!” Fairbairn joked.



After chow, the team set up a poker mat on the table and it made a small snack bar on the other.

“May I fix you a plate, Sister?” Bjornson asked. 
Helena glanced at the table briefly and spoke. “Three chocolate chip cookies, a handful of sour cream and onion chips and a root beer, please.”

“As you wish,” said Bjornson. He got up and fixed Sister Helena her plate and sat back down. 

“Thank you, Sergeant,” said Helena. 

“*Velhekomme*, Sister,” replied Bjornson. 

Colonel Larkin shuffled the cards. “The game is Five-Card Stud. Whites are worth a dollar, reds 10, blues 50, greens 100, blacks 500. Opening ante of $1.00, everyone.” All four placed a white chip in the center of the table.
