I find it weird how well those red eyes show when the fly is still and sitting on something.
We used fruit flies in biology labs studying genetics. It was funny how poorly eggs hatched into larvae and then adult flies. Some standard diet was used as a medium. I said I should take them home to grow since if I miss a fruit starting to rot in my kitchen, I have no trouble whatsoever raising fruit flies! 😂
We'd give the flies a small whiff of ether to make them easier to handle. The lab instructor explained that any more than that would kill them and we'd know by the wings sticking out at right angles to the body. One guy seriously asked (in concern) what would happen to us if we ended up smelling some too. I couldn't help myself saying "Your arms will stick out at right angles too" and quickly demonstrated. It cracked up the entire class as well as the instructor! I'm not a class clown but I can't help interjecting humour where appropriate.😁
