In the world before recorded history, there existed a race called the El'nu'thil. The El'nu'thil had mastered the power of magic, and this sword was their masterpiece. It was not only a deadly weapon, it was used in their dark magical rituals as a focus for their warlocks' spell power, rituals that frequently involved the sacrifice of living creatures.

It was wielded by the strongest warrior of their species; the number of battles it has seen is nearly as far beyond measure as the number of lives it has taken. A blood toll this great always exacts a price, not only on its victims, but on both its user and the entire civilization that created it. The proud El'nu'thil society was buried in a day by a magical catastrophe the nature of which is still unknown. Some magical scholars hypothesize that the magical energy stored up in the sword, absorbed from its countless victims, was released all at once. Whatever the cause, this mass extinction event killed most life on the planet.
