Conquest & First Contact — Barbados (1625–1650)
From 1625, when English ships first mapped Barbados’s shores, the island became a laboratory of conquest. Forests were burned to make way for cane; the Indigenous people had already been displaced by earlier waves of European violence. By 1640, sugar ruled everything, and the plantation became Britain’s most profitable imperial machine. Here began the empire’s new arithmetic: acres measured against bodies, profit measured against pain. Every clearing, every cane row, every windmill tower whispered the same truth — that the land Britain claimed was never empty, only silenced.
