“Then we’ve got a problem on our hands. The dissidents are planning something big. If they started to bring Nish’ta home to their parents, we may lose control of the village.”


“What are we going to do about it?” Bjornson asked.

“We'll Zat those infected already,” Larkin replied. “See if we can stop the spread.” He turned to Helena and Fairbairn. “Sister Helena, Fairbairn, I want you to get the addresses to those three Families and visit them. If they ask what happened, tell them the same thing you told Columba.”

“Yes, sir,” Helena and Fairbairn said simultaneously.

“Colonel, tell ya what, I’m durn handy with that dang ol’ Zat-gun, man—why don’tcha lemme go on over there help them two ladies out, dang ol’ keep things nice an’ tidy-like?” Pfluger asked.

“What did he say?” Larkin asked, confused with the Texans rambling.

“He said that he's proficient with a, Zat sir. Can he help us?”

Larkin thought for a moment and nodded. “Chief, join them. Helena is our medic and she

will get some smelling salts.”

“Dangol’thanky’sir-tell’yawhat-ain’gon’letchadown-mmhm,” Pfluger said.

“He said he won't let you down, Sir.”

Simon and the council entered the room. “Simon, esteemed council members, may I present Construction Battalion Team 3 or CB-3 for short, this is their commanding officer Lieutenant Commander (he made to say left-tenant instead of loo-tenant) Gordon McClendon and his men, Kapitänleutnant Geog Eule, Chief Petty Officer Jedidiah Pfluger, and Able Seaman Stewart Wright. They are here to help with shoring up defenses of the village,” said Larkin. Commander McClendon shook Simon and council’s hands. The rest of the Seabees followed suit.

Once formalities were out of the way, everyone sat down at the wardroom table. Larkin laid a map of the village on the table.

“Sun... Sunday. After Divine Worship,” Columba replied. “What happened to me?”

Helena and Fairbairn gave Larkin the “Should we tell him?” look. He gave them the “Need to know,” look.

Helena smiled. “You were infected by a germ, but you're fine now. Clean as a Whistle. Columba looked all around at his surroundings. He had been in Eversham's jail several times that year for brawling, usually in defense of his family's honor.

“By St. Loy! What will Amphelise say if she found me here?” Columba asked.

“I'm sure she'll understand,” said Simon. “I will speak to Alister to have you released shortly. But we will need your help to clean up the mess in the tavern.”

“I would be grateful of that,’ said Columba. Simon and SG-24 left the cell.
