Caterpillars of the Gonimbrasia belina emperor moth.
Mopane worms are an important protein food resource for many people in southern Africa.
The mopane worm name comes from the Mopane/Mopani tree from which these caterpillars are frequently harvested.
Preparation is labour-intensive, involving gutting, washing, searing/singing and rubbing to remove spines, and optionally drying. Dried masonja require soaking to rehydrate them before browning and then usually cooking as the meat in a stew.
This image shows a hyperrealistic digital painting of many pale green mopane worms, large and fleshy with spiked segments, arranged on a chipped enamelware plate. Dramatic lighting highlights their detailed textures and patterns.
