This must be one of the most terrifying things to experience.  I note that BC is under tsunami warning (not alert).  Is this because it is relatively protected by the Alaska Peninsula?

Part 1) Only two tsunamis in recent history come to mind* that have been as terrifying as you think. The image above does NOT properly picture what a real tsunami looks like. 

The 2011 tsunami caused by the Töhoku megathrust quake (9.1) which also caused the Fukushima nuclear accident. It was Japans most powerful *recorded* earthquake. The tsunami wave was as high as 40 meters in places and traveled up to 700 km/hr and traveled 10 km inland. Officially, there were 20,000 people killed or missing. Footage recorded by some freaks me out. There's no way a person can prepare for something like that! And yes, this would be absolutely terrifying! 😱

And there's the 2004 tsunami caused by the earthquake in the Indian Ocean was the other I'd never forget. It was the deadliest that we know of with almost 1/4 million lives lost or missing. It had the longest fault rupture ever measured, between 1,200 - 1,300 km long! 

Part 2) At the time, the early warning tsunami system hadn't been developed It was this tsunami and the huge loss of lives that made a worldwide development of tsunami warning system. In 2004, not a lot of people knew much about tsunamis. Many called them tidal waves which give the wrong idea. The first wave in was relatively gentle and when the ocean retreated kilometers out, a lot of people went down to the beach to collect fish and sea life left behind. They had no idea what was coming. What's interesting is people and places where it was feared would be wiped out survived well. Folklore and stories handed down through generations told of the danger signs of a tsunami. Even though they didn't know what one was, they needed the stories and fled to higher hills and were saved.
