“Hail to the Walker-in-Chains!” said one of the boys in a mocking way as he “bowed” to Sister Helena. “Aldwine!”*
“Aldwine! Aldwine! Aldwine!” the six young people chanted in eerie unison. They laughed wild and giddy. Sister Helen said nothing. Her expression was steady and unreadable. She let the young people jeer at her and Maerwynn. Helena’s eyes rested on each one of them as if she was memorizing their faces—not in judgment, but in sorrow.
