After the first few days, a huddle of people began to form in the narrow street on the Left Bank, waiting for him. Ladies with fans, men in top hats, people of the people. And, invariably, after a while he would arrive, dragging the old upright piano with a worn string behind him, like a dog on a leash.

Then he would sit down and start playing. Time would pass, and in the magic of his notes people would forget his outrageous appearance, his tattered clothes and his woman's hair.

There was only the music.
