Traditional Japanese Sword Making

The primary term used for a traditional Japanese sword maker is “katana-kaji” (刀鍛冶), which literally means “swordsmith” in Japanese. These craftsmen are highly skilled artisans trained in the complex process of forging Japanese swords such as the katana, wakizashi, and tanto.

Additionally, a master swordsmith, who has achieved a high level of expertise and recognition, might be referred to as a “tosho” (刀匠). This title is often reserved for those who have not only perfected their craft but have also been recognized by the Japanese government or cultural organizations for their contributions to preserving traditional sword-making techniques.

The process of becoming a katana-kaji or tosho is rigorous, typically requiring many years (often decades) of apprenticeship under a master swordsmith. The skills and techniques are passed down through generations, often within the same family.
