Tantalus was punished by the gods for stealing their secrets but most notably for killing his own son, cooking him for a feast, and serving him to the gods. For this outrage, he was cast into Hades, and his endless appetite would be his eternal punishment. He was forced to stand submerged in a pool of water, with a nearby fruit tree offering its fruits, but every time he reached for it, it would bend away from his grasp. He spends eternity being teased by the prospect of food, only to never get it. This is why we call such a situation "tantalizing."
This is part of a series dedicated to famous punishments in Greek myth, dedicated in particular to two fans of such works: @Diomedes and @POP-WIZARD .
This image shows Tantalus, from Greek myth, suffering in Hades. He stands in a pool, reaching for fruit that's forever out of reach. Shadowy souls observe his despair in this classic Hellenic artwork.

This one is so desolate and dark. A truly fitting end to what apparently is a sociopath.
