Thank you!  The hint here is that the warrior they encounter is a Northman, who had been making raids in the far north unbeknownst to the Saxons.  It is suggested that the events of this story helped bring about the Viking raids.

Moving deeper into the passageways within Ynys-witrin,  Cumara and Teceri discover that they are far from the first to tread these halls.  On the ground, past the first curve, lay skeletal remains still wearing lorica segmentata armor, tattered remnants of an off-white tunica and cingulum militare.  A Roman legionary.

They could make out another Roman further down the passageway.   Around the next turn, movement from the darkness ahead startled them.  An enormous man with a savage looking axe  roared from the shadows, his bearded face streaked in war paint.  Teceri gave her own war cry in return and loosed arrow after arrow into the warrior.

Cumara was shocked by the fury in her eyes as she stood over the body.

"I know these men," she spat, "They are of the same people that raided my village!"
