The rarest first generation VanWinder, and the last of the 'long-nose' design philosophy. The Excelsior sealed the fate of Yilk engineer Pol Escrin Dol, also responsible for the ridiculous 'Whale' of '27. His disagreement with colleague Thash Ving and founder Alissa Vander culminated in a practical joke: the Excelsior was already in production before Ms. Vander found out about it. She had expressly vetoed the design.

Dol quit the company, having set a production run of 86 vessels which VanWinder would be forced to sell in order to recoup material and labor costs. He quite famously moved to rival company
